To answer our research question, we will need to investigate how often a sample mean as small as the one for your class would occur if we were selecting a random sample from a population with a mean of 8 hours (null hypothesis). We will use the 3S strategy.

• 1. Statistic

Remind yourself of the sample size and average sleep hours last night in your class:

2. Simulate

We want to simulate lots of random samples of this sample size from a population with mean = 8, then we can see whether the sample mean you observed is consistent with random sampling (chance variability) or not.

The problem is, we don't know anything else about the population of student sleep times at your school. For example, we do not know its shape or the standard deviation (indicating the variability in the sleep hours from the population mean, referred to by the symbol ). So we are goign to make some assumptions, but we hope to convince you that oftentimes the particular assumptions about the population we make won't impact our conclusions.
